A member of a tribal group inhabiting forest and mountain regions. Niṣādas, who are identified with the Bhīls of Gujarat, are thought by some to be descendants of the ancient aboriginal inhabitants of the subcontinent. Certainly, they are mentioned in parts of the Veda, the Mahābhārata, and the Purāṇas, where they are generally regarded as employed in un Āryan and polluting activities, such as hunting, fishing, and robbing.
