German Lutheran theologian. In the face of contemporary unbelieving rationalism, he rejected a purely speculative interpretation of Christianity and emphasized the immediacy of religious feeling which, he held, produces the foundations of religious knowledge. He promoted the Evangelical Union of the Prussian Churches (1817).
