The naming of species according to rules developed by international associations of taxonomists. Several codes have been published, and these continue to be revised. There are five: the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), the International Code for the Nomenclature of Bacteria (ICNB), and the International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature (ICVCN).
