nonrenewable energy sources

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Sources of energy that use up the earth's finite mineral resources; these include fossil fuels. Concern about the exhaustion of nonrenewable energy sources, together with the fact that burning fossil fuels contributes to air pollution and the greenhouse effect, is leading to increased use or investigation of renewable energy resources, which are not exhaustible. These include the sun (for solar heating and solar cells), wind power (for aerogenerators) and water (for hydroelectric generators).
