Iron not contained within the prosthetic haem group of respiratory pigments (primarily, haemoglobin). Non-haem iron makes up all of the iron in eggs, plants, and dairy products, and up to 60% of the iron in animal tissue. Non-haem iron is not as readily absorbed as haem iron from the digestive tract.
