Overview

non-radial pulsation

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A form of pulsation in which waves run in all directions across the star's surface, as opposed to spherically symmetrical expansion and contraction (radial pulsation). There are normally multiple periods, resulting in a complex pattern of nodes and antinodes over the surface. Non-radial pulsations are particularly prominent in white-dwarf ZZ Ceti stars.
