Leader of Jamiatul Ulama-i Pakistan during the 1960s. Made the Jamiat the most vociferous actor in the political arena, addressing issues of national concern. Initially chosen by opponents of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's regime to succeed him as prime minister. In the 1990s his followers formed the Islamic Democratic Front as an offshoot of Jamiatul Ulama-i Islam.
