Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

In August 1585 Elizabeth took a momentous decision. The fall of Antwerp persuaded her that, without aid, the Dutch rebels would be crushed by Philip II of Spain. She agreed, at Nonsuch palace, to place 7,000 men in the field. Leicester was put in charge. Philip's response was the preparation of a great Armada.
