A major engagement in the second Anglo‐Dutch War fought on 4 and 5 August in the Thames estuary and off the Suffolk coast, this was a continuation of the battle of the Downs after each side had repaired and resupplied. Albemarle (Monck) and Prince Rupert with 89 warships were confronted by a Dutch fleet of 88 vessels under Cornelis Tromp and de Ruyter. The English had the better of the exchanges but the Dutch made harbour.
