Quick Reference

Classical ballet activity in Norway dates back to the formation of the Ny Norsk Ballett in 1945 which evolved into the Norwegian National Ballet. Modern dance did not take root until the late 1980s and 90s with the establishment of a small number of groups including Carte Blanche in Oslo (now based in Bergen) and Kreutzerkompani, in Bergen. One of the best known of these is the Jo Strømgren Kompani founded by Stromgren and Agnes Kroepelien in loose association with the Bergen International Theatre in 1998. Producing mixed-media works that incorporate dance, theatre, puppetry, and film, the company tours internationally.
