A note issued following a statutory assessment of a child or young person's special educational needs. A statutory assessment usually precedes the issuing of a statement of needs. Where it has been decided that the criteria for issuing a statement are not met, a note in lieu is issued. The note in lieu document contains a description of the child's particular needs and sets out clear objectives to be worked towards to enable the child to make progress. It also describes the level of provision which the school is expected to put in place. Progress towards the objectives would be reviewed as part of regular provision in line with the practice of the school for pupils with individual needs.
