Nove was born Alexander Jakobovich Novakovsky on 24 November 1915 in Petrograd (now St Petersburg). He died on 15 May 1994 while on holiday in Norway. His father, a Menshevik, held a junior post in the Provisional Government of 1917, but in 1922 was forced into exile. Nove grew up in North London and was educated at King Alfred School and the London School of Economics, from which he graduated with a degree in economics in 1936. Before the Second World War he held a number of temporary research posts. He married Joan Rainsford, with whom he had two sons.
