A Japanese space probe to study the atmosphere and ionosphere of the planet Mars, launched in July 1998. Nozomi was to go into orbit around Mars in January 2004 and gather data for a period of two years, but its thrusters failed to put it into orbit and on 4 December 2003 the spacecraft flew by the planet at a distance of 1 000 km into orbit around the Sun.
