A class of voltage-sensitive calcium channels found only in neurons and neuroendocrine cells where they regulate neurotransmitter or neurohormone release. A substantial depolarization is required to activate the channels and they become inactivated with time. Potently inhibited by ω-conotoxin and the analgesic drug ziconotide.
