‘A glowing cloud of volcanic ash, pumice, and larger pyroclasts which moves rapidly downslope, typically starting as large blocks, and then fragmenting to a mixture of dust through to house-sized particles’ (Mursik et al. (2005) Rep. Prog. Phys. 68). The material from a nuée ardente consolidates to form ignimbrite (welded tuff).
