Quick Reference

The traditional sail trading vessel of the lower part of the River Nile. They were two masted with a very large lateen sail on the mainmast and a much smaller one on the mizzen. A distinctive feature of their construction was the very abrupt rise of the stem as a precaution against the broken water which is very quickly knocked up by squalls that come from the desert. They carried quite sizeable cargoes, mainly of grain coming downriver, and manufactured goods going upriver.
