Feeding other than through the gastro-intestinal tract; by intravenous or intra-rectal infusion. This may be partial, to supplement food and nutrient intake, or total (TPN, total parenteral nutrition), providing the sole source of energy and nutrients for patients with major intestinal problems. Parenteral means not enteral, i.e. not through the intestinal tract; see also nutrient enemata; nutrition, enteral.
