(Lozi/Zambia)

Nyambe (Mulimu) is God, the supreme being, the creator and origin of all things. He is superior to all spirits, is omniscient and omnipotent. He controls the universe, including the lives and fortunes of humankind. All members of the royal family have divine ancestry through their descent from Mbuyu, the daughter of Nyambe. The three parts of Lozi religion consist of Nyambe, the spirits of the ancestors, and the shadows or spirits.

The first man, Kamunu, was punished by Nyambe for killing and eating animals. Whenever Kamunu killed an animal, Nyambe deprived him of one of his own possessions, first his pot, then his dog. Finally, Kamunu brought death to humankind when Nyambe deprived him of his son.

Nyambe lived on earth with his wife, Nasilele, but because of man's aggressive nature and intelligence in imitating him, he fled to heaven. After his ascension to heaven, the sun came to be regarded as the symbol of Nyambe and prayers to him were always made at sunrise.
