(b Linz, 7 Mar. 1955)
Austrian composer, director, and artist. He trained in graphic design and music since when he has experimented with a series of mixed-media, interactive projects. Those for dance have offered seminal discoveries about the ways in which electronically created imagery can alter perceptions of the live body. In Vivisector (2002, with Chris Haring) video projections and light effects played over four dancers to create illusions of speed, altered shape, and texture. In Le Sacre du Printemps (2006, with Julia Mach) 3D technology created the illusion that the dancer was crossing vast stretches of space as she moved.
Obermaier's works are toured worldwide. He has additionally created video and sound installations and composed for music ensembles including the Kronos Quartet. In 1996 he was appointed visiting professor at the University IUAV, Venice, teaching new media in dance, music, and theatre.
