Increasing concern at rising levels of obesity has led the UK government to encourage employers to develop obesity policies. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has released guidelines for employers designed to ‘create a culture that supports healthy eating and physical exercise’. Recommendations include offering gym membership as a benefit, providing regular health checks and advice on eating and exercise, and developing pricing policies in canteens that reflect the relative health benefits of food. The advice is motivated by the belief that obesity is a health issue that is as serious as smoking and alcohol abuse and that it can be effectively addressed at the workplace.
