Quick Reference

An exercise that improves attention. The subject, assuming a relaxed position in a distraction-free environment, holds an object and looks at it while repeating a meaningful cue word related to the object. When the object is taken away, the subject is instructed to repeat the cue word and visualize the object. Athletes often use a sport-related object and an appropriate cue word during an actual performance to block out irrelevant thoughts, and when concentration is waning.
