oblique rotator

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A star whose magnetic axis does not coincide with its rotational axis, but is inclined at an angle to it. The magnetic field strength therefore appears to vary as the star rotates. These fluctuations may be accompanied by small brightness variations, as in Alpha2 Canum Venaticorum stars. The Blazhko effect in certain RR Lyrae stars is thought to arise because they are oblique rotators.
