(b Vandra, 29 May 1970)

Estonian Dancer. She trained at the schools of the Estonian State Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet, dancing with Estonian Ballet before joining English National Ballet in 1990 with her partner (on and off stage) Thomas Edur. An exceptionally refined classical stylist, she was most naturally suited to the 19th-century repertory. But she also danced in works by MacMillan, Corder, and Deane, while her created role in McGregor's 2Human (2003) revealed an unexpectedly spiky, contemporary edge to her dancing. She and Edur spent a year with Birmingham Royal Ballet (1996–7) then embarked on a joint freelance career, re-establishing links with English National Ballet as principal guest artists until Oaks retired in 2009.

Subjects: Dance.
