Art produced by the indigenous inhabitants of the island chains of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia situated in the South Pacific to the east and north-east of Australia. It is particularly noted for its achievements in painting (especially of the human body), cordage (baskets, belts, and mats), and sculpture. The best-known monuments in the last category are the monumental, long-headed statues carved from soft volcanic tufa on Easter Island.
