Quick Reference

Latinized name of a presumably indigenous god known in three inscriptions dating from the Roman occupation. He is clearly linked to Mars, and his name serves twice as an epithet for that divinity, once linked also with the epithet Lenus. Ocelus is twice invoked near the Welsh village of Caerwent, Gwent, where a much-reduced statue survives with only two pairs of feet showing, one pair human, one belonging to a goose.
