Quick Reference

One of a group of mutations resulting in abnormally short polypeptide chains. Because of a base substitution, a codon specifying an amino acid is converted to UAA, which signals chain termination. UAA appears to be the codon primarily used for chain termination in E. coli. See amber mutation, nonsense mutation.
