octane rating

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Octane is the antiknock rating of petroleum fuels, i.e., an indicator of the efficiency of combustion. Pure iso-octane has a rating of 100, and commercially marketed gasoline is rated as a percentage of this. The harmful effects of gasoline sniffing increase with the octane rating, especially in places where tetra-ethyl lead additive, a powerful neurotoxin, is still used.
