Son of Oswald, of Bernicia, was put in (possibly as sub-king) either by Oswiu, his uncle, or as a client king by the Mercians. He was patron of bishop Cedd. Bede explains that Oethelwald refused to help Oswiu at the battle of the river Winwaed in 655 against Penda of Mercia, retiring to a place of safety. After Oswiu's victory, he is not heard of again.
