The technical term used for administrative and billing purposes for an encounter between a patient and a physician or other provider of health care services that occurs in the physician's consulting rooms (“surgery” in British terminology) or in a clinic or office. An encounter in a hospital is a hospital visit, and one in the patient's home is a house call or domiciliary visit when the details appear on claims for medical insurance benefits.
