Quick Reference

Art commissioned in Britain during the First and Second World Wars from selected artists to record the nation at war. The scheme embraced many distinguished painters and draughtsmen including Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer. During the Second World War the commissioning Artists' Advisory Committee was chaired by the celebrated art historian Kenneth Clark, who recalled that such work in many cases prevented the artists from being killed on active service. The most extensive collection of such work is now housed in the Imperial War Museum, London.
