Fr. composer and pianist of Spanish descent. Career as pianist until outbreak of war in 1939. On return to Paris, 1946, formed Groupe Zodiaque ‘to defend freedom of expression against dictatorial aesthetic attitudes’. Wrote much of importance for pf. His comps. shun serialism but are complex in other ways. Works incl. operas Autodafé (1971–2) and La Célestine (1982–6); 3 Graphiques, gui. conc. (1950–7); Anneau de Tamarit, vc., orch. (1976); pf. conc. (1980–1); 2 str. qts. (1963, 1979–80); many choral works; much chamber mus.; 24 Preludes, pf. (1972–3) and other kbd. pieces; and incid. mus. for plays, films, and radio.
