Quick Reference

Chemicals that reduce surface tension between oil and water, used to help break up large aggregations of spilled oil that occur when heavily laden oil tankers encounter severe storms or suffer navigation errors, causing maritime disasters. The efficacy of dispersants is maximum with light oils that often disperse on their own, and some dispersants are toxic to birds, marine, and shore life.
