Quick Reference

The application of gold leaf to a surface, such as a picture frame, usually with a linseed oil-based adhesive. Unlike water gilding, it can be applied without the necessity for a preparatory layer of whiting. However, it cannot be burnished as water gilding can, and it does not last as well, the oil often darkening with age.
