The slightly enlarged front end of the olfactory tract, resembling a match head projecting from the front lower margin of each cerebral hemisphere, receiving nerve impulses from the olfactory receptors and sending impulses via the olfactory nerve directly to the olfactory cortex and the amygdala, unique among sensory pathways in bypassing the thalamus entirely.
