A laboratory mouse carrying activated human cancer genes. Du Pont started selling oncomice late in 1988. They were the first transgenic animals to be patented. These mice carry the ras oncogene plus a mouse mammary tumor virus promoter. This ensures that the oncogene is activated in breast tissue, and the mice develop breast cancer a few months after birth. See Chronology, 1988, Leder and Stewart.
