Quick Reference

A policy operated by some universities or other institutions of higher education allowing students who do not possess the normal entry requirements, such as General Certificate of Education Advanced Levels, to gain entry to courses. In the United Kingdom, only the Open University operates an open admissions policy as a norm, although other universities and colleges have admissions regulations for mature students which are more flexible or open than for applicants who are school‐leavers. Sometimes also referred to as open access, open admission is more often encountered in American universities. See also Access course; National Open College Network.
