An electrocardiograph worn by either of two designated crew members on the space shuttle during ascent and re-entry of the vehicle. The system can also be used during orbit in special situations. Three OBS electrodes are placed on the skin with electrode paste and double-sided adhesive tape from an electrode application kit. An amplified analogue signal, monitoring the astronaut's heart, is transmitted to the ground in real time or stored on tape.
