(Thomas: Hamlet). Sop. Daughter of the chief minister, Polonius. She is in love with Hamlet, son of the late king, and is unaware that her father has been involved in the plot to kill the King. When Hamlet, upset at learning the truth, rejects her, she loses her sanity and drowns herself in a lake. Aria: A vos jeux, mes amis (‘To your games, my friends’)—in this famous mad scene, she imagines that she is married to Hamlet and sings about the beautiful girl who draws her faithless lovers to a watery grave.
