Overview

optical pathlength

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The length of the optical path through a refracting medium, such as the filter in a photometer. This differs from the geometrical distance travelled because the light is refracted on entering and leaving the filter, so if a filter is placed in front of the focal plane of a telescope then the focus must be lengthened.
