The skill of communicating clearly by speech, and of comprehending the spoken communications of others. It is used to emphasize the importance of spoken language skills, particularly, but not exclusively, in primary education, and has been coined relatively recently to stand alongside literacy and numeracy as an essential component of a child's education. The importance of oracy is reflected in the National Literacy Strategy and the literacy hour. Comprehension of the spoken word and the ability to speak articulately and fluently are emphasized in the national curriculum attainment targets for speaking and listening. Oracy skills are also a component of the Adult Basic Skills Strategy, designed to raise levels of adult literacy.
