A method of formal assessment in which the candidate is questioned face to face by the examiner and is assessed on the quality of their response. The examination of candidates in modern foreign languages usually includes an oral component to enable the student's skill in comprehending and conversing in the spoken language to be assessed. Oral examinations may also be conducted as an alternative where the candidate is unable to sit a written examination. See also viva.
