A cross‐grained character and severe critic of the capital's scholastic milieu, in which he did not prosper, he is recalled by his pupil Horace for the beatings administered during lessons on Livius Andronicus' Odyssey; yet he was honoured at Beneventum with a statue on the town's capitolium.
