Quick Reference

Potent orexigenic (appetite-stimulating) peptides, orexin-A (hypocretin-1, 33 aa) and orexin B (hypocretin-2, 28 aa), derived from the same precursor peptide. They are specifically localized in neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area, which is implicated in feeding behaviour, but the physiological role is likely to be more complex and mutations in orexin are associated with narcolepsy. The receptor is G-protein coupled.
