A poetic and literary name for the countries of the East, especially east Asia. The word comes (in late Middle English, via Old French) from Latin orient- ‘rising or east’, from oriri ‘to rise’.

Orient Express a train which ran between Paris and Istanbul and other Balkan cities, via Vienna, from 1883 to 1977; the name is also used for a successor to this train, following part of the original route.
