The area that encompasses India and Asia south of the Himalayan–Tibetan mountain barrier, and the Australasian archipelago, excluding New Guinea and Sulawesi. There are marked similarities with the Ethiopian region (e.g. both have elephants and rhinoceroses) but there are endemic groups (e.g. pandas and gibbons).
