The construction of a church so that its longer axis runs east to west. In the early basilicas of Rome the altar was at the west end; elsewhere more usually at the east. Though orientation is derived historically from a pagan habit of praying towards the sunrise, Christians have seen in its adoption symbolic reference to Christ as the Rising Sun.
