Describing a condition of the upper jaw in which it is in an approximately vertical relationship. Orthognathic surgery is the surgical correction of severe malocclusion in which development of one or both jaws is abnormal. The skeletal discrepancy can occur in an antero-posterior, vertical, or transverse plane of space or any combination of all three. Treatment is usually undertaken in conjunction with orthodontic therapy; additionally, restorative treatment may be involved if there are missing, damaged, or malformed teeth.
