The degradation of joints as an eventual consequence of mechanical trauma. There is cartilage degradation by matrix metallopeptidases and progressive loss of joint function. Unlike rheumatoid arthritis there is not an autoimmune element and the inflammation is generally considered to be secondary rather than causative. Osteoarthritis with mild chondrodysplasia is associated with mutations in the collagen (COL2A1) gene.
