The principal phosphorylated glycoprotein of bone, a sialoprotein (bone sialoprotein 1, secreted phosphoprotein 1, SPP-1, nephropontin, uropontin, 40 kDa, 314 aa) that links cells and the hydroxyapatite of mineralized matrix. It is produced by osteoblasts, to which it binds via αvβ3 integrin. Synthesis is stimulated by calcitriol (vitamin D3).
