Quick Reference

A condition where osteomyelitis develops at a site of radiation injury; it can be spontaneous but most commonly results from tissue injury such as denture-related injury, ulcers, periodontal procedures, or tooth extraction. Pain may be severe and there may be a raised body temperature (pyrexia). It is the result of a reduction in bone vascularity and damage to the bone cells (osteocytes) due to radiation damage which reduce their potential for repair. The mandible is more commonly affected than the maxilla because of its natural reduced vascularity. The overlying mucosa often appears pale due to radiation damage.

Subjects: Dentistry.
